Kiawe Grill, dunno why I had Lamb on my mind.

Decided to go and eat at Kiawe Grill and for some reason I wanted to try the Lamp Chops, funny since this is the first time I have ever bought Lamb. I eat it only if someone makes it (usually my sister, they like to eat Lamb). Kiawe Grill gives you a plate to select the vegetables that you want which reminds you of a Korean Plate Lunch place you get 14oz of vegetables (the plate they give you weighs 16oz) the girl at the counter told us you can fill it up to 30 huh? oh yeah because of the plate heh. well as you can see I loaded it up with the dry Daikon Kim Chee, Bean Sprouts, Choy Sum, Tofu and  a dollop of Mac salad. The Lamb was sliced thinly (which I think was better that they did that) but was very moist and not overcooked. Lamb can be quite flavorful and this was no exception I got the Pulehu Lamb which was great if you like Lamb. I previously had the Kiawe Special with the Chicken, Beef and Kalbi and that had that signature smoky flavor the lamb it seems they don't add any smokey flavor to it which is good it lets the lamb taste shine through.
Kiawe Grill has quite a bit of exotic meats to satisfy anyone with their choices of Ostrich, Kobe Beef, Buffalo, and Lamb (the only one I haven't tried is the Ostrich) a great place to go when you want a little something different.

Haha Here I am on Google Maps Street View

Seems that Google Maps Street View has finally come to Hawaii I took a look at where I saw the Google Car and got to see me crossing the street with my face blurred out (like they usually do) I am in the middle of the picture halfway across the street.

Sugoi's Garlic Chicken Bento, Yum!

Sugoi's a place that brings Garlic Chicken to my mind I decided to go have lunch there today and of course was not disappointed, Yum! Great Garlic chicken as usual.
I opted for the Bento that came with two pieces teri-beef ,a hotdog, egg omelet, and two Ume's on a bed of rice topped with furukaki. Now my poor coworkers will have to endure the garlic breath Rawwwrrr! heh.

Wraps and Rolls

Wraps and Rolls and excellent place for wraps I went there after seeing so many other people getting wraps from here and I kept on telling myself I want to try it. I ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad wrap and the Salmon wrap and my wife ordered the Spinach and Artichoke quesadilla and the crab with creamy wasabi dressing. I was so excited I forgot to take a picture and gobbled down my Chinese Chicken salad wrap heh. So the picture I have is the Spinach and Artichoke quesadilla which by the way was really good I got a piece from my wife.
The Wrap was just like getting a Spinach and Artichoke dip in a quesadilla but not as rich but with a lot of flavor I want to go back for that one.
I was really happy with the wraps as both of my wraps had a healthy amount of lettuce and rice noodles as well as the filling and wasn't heavy which is just what I wanted.
I would heartily recommend going here.

The Mandalay - Plate Lunch

Being a regular plate lunch kinda guy I usually pass by "The Mandalay" but I noticed the other day that they had Plate Lunches so I had to go now :-). I went in and scanned the fare and selected Chow Fun, Sweet Sour Fish and Satay Beef not my normal fare but I felt adventurous and tired of eating the same old things. I decided to forgo eating there as they only had two tables right in front of the counter and strolled a block to Iolani Palace grounds where since it being a Friday I get the added bonus of hearing the Royal Hawaiian Band oh my god Flashback! to the days I was at UHM and playing in the Marching and Concert bands I remember the days of being a Marching Trumpet player at the football games and then having to play Baritone in the Concert band because there were too many Trumpet players haha good thing I also played Baritone heh ugh wait a minute push those thoughts aside... back to the food. Well I was pleasantly surprised that the Sweet Sour Fish was not overcooked and was just right and the sauce wasn't overpowering I really liked it. The Satay beef was also great the vegetables were crunchy and not overcooked and the onions still had a bit of crunch to them perfect.
The Chow Fun was good also and I thought about it that this was a fine Chinese Restaurant also so I should be good I would have to recommend going to "The Mandalay" for the Plate Lunches a refreshing change from fast Chinese food that is usually overcooked and limp vegetables.

Miss Saigon Bistro

Ahh the taste of Pho! I kind of had in mind (event though it was a hot day) to eat some, But I wanted to try someplace new.
I always pass this place when going into Chinatown and thought it might be nice to try it out since it looked pretty nice inside, and  it was 30% off for lunch the part Chinee in me was coming out couldn't pass it up. So I peeked in... humm only one other patron and nobody in site so I snapped a pic, yah know the shy photog I am :-P any way I already knew what I wanted with a quick glance at the menu the Combo Pho hehe...
Well after waiting a bit with no one in sight I was just about to go look for someone when someone popped out of the Kitchen with a quick wave he hurriedly got a glass of water and a menu and got me set up I didn't hesitate and ordered right there.
I had to admit my wife called to stress me out..well actually to make trouble to me for fun, and we yakked for a while, I had to tell her my food is getting cold so I could eat. I had to admit the waiter asked me if I would like him to heat up my food again, that was nice of him maybe he saw me take a pic of the Pho heh, anyway I admit it was as good as any other Pho place although I'd like a little more vegetables but it was actually enough
I did like that the place was clean and bright and a really nice atmosphere that and the Pho was good would make me come back again.

You Hungry?

Here again it was Lunch time, where to eat that age old question... Ok, I should go somewhere I haven't gone in a while so off to "You Hungry?"
on the corner of Alakea St. and S. Beretania St. Ohhh mmmmm what to eat Steak? pretty good steak plates... naw... ok Oh That looks good. Soo I order up the Garlic Ahi w/ Wasabi sauce on Caesar Salad wow! cool just what I wanted lots of flavor and yet still light perfect.
So now the question is where to eat it? I decided to get away from being anywhere too close to work and walked off to the State Capitol and sat next to the Korean and Vietnam War memorial (reminds me of Qbert) next to that is a few benches around a tree perfect.
Great, so as you can see it is covered with a wasabi garlicy sauce, well at least that's what I think it is. First bite, oooo yes I catch the nice burn of the Wasabi not too strong but just right in my opinion but I can't seem to find the garlic taste under that which isn't a big deal as the Wasabi complements the taste of the Grilled Ahi and I couldn't be happier just a perfect match with the Garlic Wasabi Ahi is the Caesar Salad I think it goes well with it I'm glad I picked this plate.
Lunch went really well I was enjoying it as was my neighbor who seemed to drawing the memorial while sitting on the grass until some strange guy came meandering all over the lawn heading for us singing aimlessly and looking like he was drunk or spaced out. He was checking out each Trash bin and started eyeing up my Lunch... No dude I'm going to eat it all! and I did and purposely walked to the trash bin on the other side of the memorial so as not to confront the crazy near the benches where I was eating. Sigh it was a good lunch and would have been peaceful except for the crazy dude.

Nakai Saimin

1329 Nu'uanu Ave

Went on my usual wanderings around downtown and I always wanted to try out Nakai Saimin everytime I passed there I had these flashbacks of Saimin of old. Saimin with a Teriyaki stick and memories of "small kid time" when my parents used to take me to that Saimin Place in Kaimuki on Waialae Ave. with that semi open lanai feeling except, I can just picture the place but the name escapes me. I used to love the Teriyaki Sticks with my Saimin from there and Kinau Saimin.

Nakai Saimin just brought back those old memories just by browsing the menu. I went inside the small shop which had about 5 or 6 tables a quaint little shop which in a way reminded me of the small Ramen Shops I used to go to in Japan which were out the way of the main streets.
I ordered up a Seafood Saimin ($8.00) and a Teriyaki Stick ($2.50) and was brought a glass of water with a slice of Lemon in it, how nice.
I received my saimin and it was just like eating Saimin when I was a little kid (of course I could just barely finish it when I was small) the whole experience to sum it up was just like when I was a kid and just as good. Not too many of these Saimin places anymore a lot of people are now going mostly to Ramen Shops with the Rich Broth and stronger flavors rather than the delicate goodness of Saimin such memories. Oh and did I mention they make their own Noodles?

Courtside Cafe

As usual I went to forage for some grinds decided to walk toward Diamond Head or East in other words... I thought maybe I'll check out what Lunch wagons are around today. Reaching Mililani St. I was a bit amazed as there was only one lunch wagon Nicky Lunchwagon, not seeing anything I was really interested in I decided to walk by the court house side and check out Courtside Cafe.
Humm ok just seeing the grill outside made me hungry so I snapped a quick shot and ducked inside.
Ahead of me were a bunch of Firefighters on their last day of training at the Training Center around the corner ordering up Steak plates.
I opted for the Steak and Chicken plate to get the best of both worlds, I couldn't grumble the price was good too at $6.50 a plate. The first bite of the Chicken I just wasn't prepared for the rush of flavor and was almost overwhelmed maybe it was the plain old bbq chicken plates I've been eating... The chicken was moist and Juicy with a heck of a lot of interesting flavor from both the chicken and sauce the Steak was just the way I like it at Medium to Medium Rare and just right flavor wise. I highly recommend going here as for the price and amount of food you get is a good deal around that area.
